In a dusty mining-town square, a girl with a braid raises her hand as she steps out of the crowd, a small blonde girl held back behind her and a woman in pink on the stage.

Katniss

I volunteer! No! I volunteer! I volunteer as a tribute!

— The Hunger Games  ·  2012

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the sentence that starts the whole story: an act of love so fast that Katniss has volunteered before she has decided anything. In a world that treats children as entertainment, she steps toward the danger instead of away from it. Fans quote it for any moment when someone takes the hard job to spare another, and it is the line most people remember from the first film.

Spoilers for The Hunger GamesShow the scene

At the annual reaping in District 12, the name drawn for the 74th Hunger Games is Primrose Everdeen, Katniss's younger sister. Before Prim can reach the stage, Katniss calls out that she volunteers in her place. Volunteering was rare in the poorer districts, and Katniss was the first volunteer from District 12 in decades. She is escorted to the Capitol with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark and their mentor, Haymitch Abernathy, the only living victor from their district.
