Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Bobby loves water the way other people love wine, and the line is his connoisseur's verdict, delivered without irony. The joke is how seriously a very plain subject is treated, and how the stuttering shyness melts away the moment he talks about water. It sums up the film's central gag, and works as a toast for anyone holding a glass of tap water.

Spoilers for The WaterboyShow the scene

The Waterboy (1998) is built on Bobby Boucher's devotion to water. He is the water boy for the South Central Louisiana State football team and treats the contents of his jug as sacred, to the point of making Coach Klein promise never to hand its contents to any human person. When Klein finally tastes it he calls it far better than what he serves his players, and Bobby is appalled to see the polluted jug the team normally drinks from. The film grew out of a Saturday Night Live character Sandler had played, and Bobby's love of water carried over.
