Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The gag is the plain ordinariness of the encouragement: a bystander turning up out of nowhere to cheer the hero on, played by one of Sandler's closest collaborators. As a shout it is all-purpose, the kind of thing you say to anyone facing something daunting, which is why it travels well as a quote.

Spoilers for The WaterboyShow the scene

Rob Schneider, a regular in Adam Sandler's films, has a cameo in The Waterboy (1998) credited only as 'Townie', and the encouraging 'You can do it!' is the call the character is there to shout. Schneider is one of several cameos in the film, alongside football figures such as Lawrence Taylor and Bill Cowher. The film was directed by Frank Coraci and written by Sandler and Tim Herlihy.
