Behind every great man is a great woman, and behind her is his wife.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The familiar claim about a woman behind a successful man turns into a joke about a separate wife behind her. It introduces a third person to undercut the respectable saying, without establishing any particular real relationship.
