…a trip through a sewer in a glass-bottom boat.

What it means
Our interpretation.
A sightseeing boat normally promises an attractive view. Sending it through a sewer turns that promise into an invitation to inspect filth from comfortable surroundings. The image is a compact expression of disgust, making an apparently pleasant excursion sound grotesque.
