Lord Percy

Oh, Edmund, can it be true? That I hold here, in my mortal hand, a nugget of purest green?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Percy's enthusiasm is indestructible. Having failed to make gold, he treats an ordinary colour as a new precious material and promotes himself from failed alchemist to pioneer. The grandeur of the announcement is what makes it work: he has not changed the result, only invented a more flattering way to describe it.

In ‘Money’, the fourth episode of Blackadder II (1986), Percy tries to solve Blackadder's financial crisis by making gold. He removes the lid from his alchemical vessel and triumphantly reveals a green substance. Blackadder points out the obvious problem, but Percy recasts the failure as a historic discovery. His pride survives even this new name for what he has produced, and he later attempts to turn it into jewellery.
