Percy arrives with his lowered bow at a Tudor archery practice while Blackadder greets him with folded arms and an unimpressed stare.

Lord Blackadder

Sorry I'm late! / Oh, don't bother apologising. I'm sorry you're alive.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The reply changes the subject from a minor lapse in punctuality to Percy's entire existence. Blackadder's economy makes the cruelty funnier: the setup barely lands before he turns it inside out. Percy treating it as good fooling gives the exchange its character; this is their normal way of spending a morning together.

Spoilers for BlackadderShow the scene

Near the start of ‘Bells’, the first episode of Blackadder II (1986), Lord Blackadder is practising archery when Percy arrives late. Percy's apology receives a much broader expression of regret than he expected. He carries on regardless, taking his place at the target practice and soon giving Blackadder another opportunity to mock him. Their friendship survives on Percy's almost inexhaustible willingness to miss the insult.
