Basil Fawlty

I'm going to give you a damn good thrashing!

— Fawlty Towers • 1975

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the purest picture of Basil Fawlty, a man who builds his dignity on the thinnest social ladder and loses it all to a stalled engine. The comedy sits in the formal, almost legal warning he gives a machine, and then in the sheer commitment of the branch. It is one of British sitcom's most repeated images, spoofed and echoed ever since.

Spoilers for Fawlty TowersShow the scene

The climax of Fawlty Towers' "Gourmet Night" (17 October 1975, series 1, episode 5). Basil Fawlty's attempt to attract a posher clientele collapses when his chef, Kurt, gets drunk and cannot cook. As Basil rushes round trying to rescue the evening, the hotel's unreliable car refuses to start. He shouts at it, counts to three, lists its offences, announces that he is going to give it a damn good thrashing, then fetches a tree branch and beats the bonnet.
