Tyrion turns his appearance into a fee schedule: a man with a disfigured face and short stature insists on being treated as the monster the court already calls him. It is bitter humour, but also a test, aimed at the one person who has stayed. Fans quote it as the textbook case of Tyrion defusing a cruel moment with a joke before anyone else can.

In "Valar Morghulis", the season 2 finale (aired 3 June 2012), Tyrion Lannister is recovering in shabby quarters after the Battle of the Blackwater, where Ser Mandon Moore wounded him. Pycelle gloats that he is no longer acting Hand, and Varys tells him the city's saviour will get no honours. Shae urges him to leave with her for Pentos. He refuses, and when she uncovers the scar on his face, he answers with this joke at his own expense.
