When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Cersei turns the show's title into a threat, and she means it as a law of the world rather than a boast. In one sentence it explains why Ned, who plays by honour, is in trouble. It is the series' unofficial thesis, the line fans reach for when politics gets lethal, whether in a boardroom or a fantasy kingdom.

Spoilers for Game of ThronesShow the scene
The line comes in the seventh episode of the first season, "You Win or You Die" (29 May 2011). Eddard Stark has discovered the secret that Jon Arryn died for: Cersei's three children are the product of incest with her brother Jaime, not Robert's. Ned confronts her in King's Landing and tells her to take her children and run before Robert returns from his hunt. Cersei is not afraid. She calls him a fool for turning down the throne and delivers the line, telling him that in the game of thrones you either win or you die.
