A red-haired wildling woman with a bow sits close to a dark-haired man in a black fur cloak at an icy cave mouth, a frozen camp and a great ice wall beyond.

Ygritte

You know nothing, Jon Snow.

— Game of Thrones  ·  2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It starts as teasing and ends as a lover's last word. Ygritte means that Jon is naive about the wildlings, about love and about the war coming, and the show lets that mockery curdle into grief. It became the series' most repeated taunt and an internet reply for anyone confidently wrong.

Spoilers for Game of ThronesShow the scene

Ygritte, a spearwife of the Free Folk, aims this jibe at Jon Snow from the days when he is her prisoner beyond the Wall, and each time he claims to understand something about the world she sets him straight. The most painful use comes in season 3: Jon has slipped away from the wildlings and turns to ride back to the Wall, Ygritte draws her bow, hesitates, says the line, and then shoots him in the back. In season 4's "The Watchers on the Wall" it is her last line before she dies in his arms.
