Our interpretation.
Grand predictions get punctured by dry cynicism. Instead of transformation or renewal, the new millennium is forecast to bring more of the exact same tedium that came before. It's a wry rejection of hopeful hype, insisting that nothing fundamental actually changes with the calendar.
