In a starship mess hall, a tall blonde woman in a silver uniform stands over four bored ex-Borg children and a horned girl at a board game, a cat-like cook beside them.

Seven of Nine

Fun will now commence.

— Star Trek: Voyager ‧ 1995

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Seven of Nine treats fun as a task with a start time, and the deadpan is the joke: the ex-Borg drone is trying her best to be a good guardian and has no idea that play cannot be ordered. It works as a catchphrase for any forced social event, office away-day or mandatory team game, and it shows why her relationship with the children is one of Voyager's warmest running gags.

Spoilers for Star Trek: VoyagerShow the scene

In "Ashes to Ashes" (Star Trek: Voyager, season 6, episode 18, first aired 1 March 2000), the four Borg children Voyager rescued are still learning to be kids, and Seven of Nine is in charge of them. She has scheduled exactly one hour of recreation, and in the mess hall she shepherds the reluctant children to a game of kadis-kot with Neelix and Naomi Wildman, announcing that "fun" will now commence. It goes badly: the twins cheat over their neural link, Seven applies her Punishment Protocol, and Icheb sweeps the pieces off the table and storms out. Later, when Mezoti's clay sculpture ignores the assignment, Seven lets it go.
