Dedicate your hearts!

— Attack on Titan  ·  2013

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Offer your heart, offer your life: the Scouts' salute is a promise to die for humanity's survival, and Erwin turns it from a drill into a goodbye. Fans quote the Japanese, Shinzou wo Sasageyo, and the English Dedicate your hearts, almost interchangeably, and the salute became one of the series' most recognisable signs.

Spoilers for Attack on TitanShow the scene

Shinzou wo sasageyo is the Survey Corps' salute, used to steel their resolve. Its defining use is in season 3, episode 16 (53 overall), "Perfect Game" (aired 20 May 2019). The Beast Titan's rock barrage has killed most of the Scouts outside the wall. Commander Erwin Smith, knowing it is a suicide charge meant only to draw the Titan's attention so Levi can kill it, shares a farewell with Levi, rallies the surviving recruits and leads them forward through the barrage.
