What it means
Our interpretation.
Erwin cannot promise survival. He asks the recruits to give meaning to those who died before them through the action they take together.

Spoilers for Attack on TitanShow the scene
Before the charge outside Shiganshina, Erwin tells the recruits that they will draw the Beast Titan’s fire so Levi can reach him. He leads them forward despite knowing what that means. Chapter 80 becomes episode 53, “Perfect Game”; this fan-quoted rage/scream/fight sequence differs from the English dub’s longer ending, which finishes on “rage.”
