I'll wipe them out. Every last one of them!

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the oath that sets Eren on his path: a child's grief turned into a mission, with no room for anything else. Fans quote it because the series keeps returning to it, and its meaning bends far past the Titans by the end, when the same blunt hatred points at the whole outside world. The line is the clearest 'before' picture for one of anime's best-known character arcs.

Spoilers for Attack on TitanShow the scene

Attack on Titan, season 1, episode 2, "That Day: The Fall of Shiganshina, Part 2" (aired 14 April 2013). The Colossal Titan has just broken Wall Maria, and young Eren Yeager has watched a Titan eat his mother in the ruins of their home. As the refugees flee Shiganshina by boat, and the Armored Titan smashes through the inner gate, Eren realises he can never go home and swears to drive every last Titan out of the world. The vow becomes his reason for joining the military, and Eren repeats it when he first transforms during the Trost battle.
