The only thing we're allowed to do is believe that we won't regret the choice we made.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a captain's way of giving an order without giving one: nobody can tell Eren the right answer, so he must own whichever one he picks. The line sums up the series' ethic of choosing under impossible odds, and Levi's own later losses make it hit harder on a rewatch. Fans use the 'won't regret the choice' form as a motto for any decision that can't be undone.

Spoilers for Attack on TitanShow the scene

The scene is episode 19 of Attack on Titan's first season, "Bite: The 57th Exterior Scouting Mission, Part 3" (Japanese broadcast 18 August 2013). Squad Levi is racing through the Forest of Giant Trees with the Female Titan on their heels, and Eren, whom the squad is guarding, wants to transform and fight. Levi tells him he is not wrong to want to, and offers a choice: trust the squad and keep running, or believe in himself and go back. Since nobody can know in advance how a choice will turn out, Levi says, he should choose the one he'll regret the least. The wording varies with each translation.
