The confession is shocking partly because Reiner speaks as though the impossible were an everyday fact. His fractured loyalties briefly surface without any dramatic preparation.

On top of Wall Rose, Reiner tells Eren the truth with an almost casual delivery while Bertholdt stands nearby. The ordinary tone contrasts with the scale of the betrayal. Chapter 42 becomes episode 31, “Warrior”; this is the archived subtitle sentence, while other translations name Bertholdt explicitly or spell “Armoured.”
