Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line explains the whole series from the death god's seat: Ryuk is not good or evil, only curious, and humans are the best entertainment he has found. It is also an ironic comment on Light's grandiose speech, which he treats as a show. Fans use it as a deadpan reaction to anyone going dramatically off the rails, and Ryuk's apple-crunching shrug is a meme in its own right.

Spoilers for Death NoteShow the scene

Ryuk's trademark line closes the first episode of the Death Note anime, "Rebirth" (Japan, 3 October 2006), adapting the manga's first chapter, "Boredom". Ryuk, a bored shinigami, has dropped his Death Note into the human world, and a student named Light Yagami picked it up. At the end of the episode Light declares that he will become the god of the new world. Ryuk, who has been watching, answers that it is just as he thought: humans are so interesting. It recurs as Ryuk's reason for staying at Light's side throughout the series.
