Light Yagami

I am Kira.

— Death Note · 2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For 36 episodes the audience has known Light is Kira; the thrill of the series is that nobody in the room does. When he finally says it aloud, the line is both a collapse and a boast, a mask dropping from someone who still thinks he is winning. It has become the standard meme line for any reveal, often shouted after a very small crime.

Spoilers for Death NoteShow the scene

In Death Note's final episode, 37 ("New World"), Light Yagami stands in the Yellow Box Warehouse with the Japanese Task Force and Near's SPK. Near has exposed Teru Mikami's notebook as a fake, and since Light's name is the only one not written in the real one, he is cornered. After a desperate attempt to call it a set-up, Light laughs and says: "That's right. I am Kira." He goes on to declare himself the god of the new world, until Matsuda shoots him.
