Light Yagami

I'll take a potato chip... and eat it!

— Death Note · 2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A mastermind's most sinister move turns out to be a snack, which is the joke and the appeal: Light narrates opening a bag of chips as if it were a declaration of war. The English dub's earnest overacting turned it into one of the most-repeated lines of anime fandom, quoted whenever someone does something trivial with great ceremony.

Spoilers for Death NoteShow the scene

In episode 8, "Glare", the detective L is closing in on Kira and has surveillance cameras installed in the homes of suspects, including Light Yagami's room. Light learns he is being watched and has his shinigami Ryuk locate the cameras. To keep killing unseen, he hides a small television in a bag of potato chips and watches the news, studying with his right hand while writing criminals' names in the Death Note with his left. As he does it he narrates his plan with absurd gravity, and in the English dub that narration gives us the line. The next day he throws the television out with the trash.
