Light Yagami

I am Justice!

— Death Note · 2006

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Light's self-image said aloud at the exact moment it becomes a duel: he has just killed a man on camera and still claims to protect the innocent. The line shows how the show turns a crusade into a contest, with two geniuses who each believe the other is the villain. Fans quote it ironically, usually about someone who is sure that his own side is the righteous one.

Spoilers for Death NoteShow the scene

In episode 2, "Confrontation", a worldwide broadcast cuts into the TV programme and a man in a suit calls himself L and condemns Kira. Light, watching, writes the man's name in the Death Note only when he calls Kira's work evil, and forty seconds later the man collapses on live television. The broadcast was in fact a decoy: L is revealed to have aired it only in the Kanto region of Japan, narrowing down where Kira lives. Light curses L for being one step ahead, and the two swear to hunt each other down, each convinced that he is justice. Light's declaration "I am Justice!" follows.
