Satoru Gojo

Don't worry. I'm the strongest.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Gojo says it breezily, as if the facts were boring, and it is the series' way of telling the reader that a problem is about to be solved by someone who can afford to joke. It cuts both ways: the reassurance is warm to his students, and arrogant to everyone else. It is also the line that gives his absence from the story its weight, because once the strongest is gone, nobody is left to say it.

The line is Satoru Gojo's calling card in Jujutsu Kaisen (manga from 2018, anime from 2020), the reassurance he gives his students and allies when a situation looks hopeless. Gojo is a special-grade sorcerer and a teacher at Tokyo Jujutsu High, the first person in four hundred years to inherit both the Limitless technique and the Six Eyes, and the story treats his claim to be the strongest as plain fact. Even sealed in the Prison Realm after the Shibuya Incident, he reassures himself that everything will be fine. His clash with Sukuna is billed as a fight between the two strongest.
