Usopp

I am the great Captain Usopp!

— One Piece  ·  1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Usopp's tall-tale boast shows the series' trick for him: a liar and a coward who talks himself into bravery. The great captain turns into the crew's sniper, and the joke becomes a promise. Fans quote it as a dare to themselves before something scary, and the exaggerated pose and long nose have become one of the series' most recognisable gag images.

Spoilers for One PieceShow the scene

The Straw Hats sail into Syrup Village in search of a ship. They first see Usopp, the village's famous liar, who has just run through town shouting that pirates are coming, then admitted he was joking. When his three child followers warn him that real pirates have landed, he first tries to slip away, then changes his mind when he hears there are only three of them. Facing Luffy, Nami and Zoro, he puffs himself up as the toughest pirate in the village with a huge army, and the children flee, leaving him alone. Nami calls out his lie and he gives himself away, but Luffy laughs and the group sits down to a meal. It is chapter 23 and anime episode 9, 'Honorable Liar? Captain Usopp'.
