The joke gives away Brook at once: a ghostly, gloomy skeleton with the manners of a gentleman and the habits of a lecher, and the setup for his running gag 'I have no eyes, but may I see your...?'. It is also the first sign that this crew will welcome anyone, however strange. The 'Yohohoho' laugh and the panty request are what fans most readily quote and parody from Brook.

Brook makes his debut in chapter 442 of the manga, the opening of the Thriller Bark arc. The Straw Hats sail the Thousand Sunny into the fog of the Florian Triangle and find a huge drifting ghost ship, where Sanji, Luffy and Nami climb aboard and meet a skeleton drinking tea. He introduces himself as a gentleman skeleton, bows to Nami, and asks to see her underwear, and she knocks him down. The anime shows this in episode 337 as his unnamed debut, and in episode 338 he asks Robin the same, and gets slapped again. Luffy then asks him to join the crew, and he agrees on the spot.
