Thors

A true warrior needs no sword.

— Vinland Saga • 2019

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

For Thors it is not bravado but his whole creed: real strength is not needing violence. The line is the thesis of the series, because his son Thorfinn spends the next decades learning what it means. Thorfinn's furious reaction at the end of chapter 16 and the long road to his own answer in season 2 are why fans still treat it as one of anime's great, most-debated lines.

Spoilers for Vinland SagaShow the scene

In the year 1002, off the Icelandic coast, Thors Snorresson, once the Jomsvikings' feared 'Troll of Jom', has beaten Askeladd's pirates in a duel without killing anyone and holds a blade at Askeladd's throat. Askeladd asks why a man like him hid away in Iceland for fifteen years. Thors answers that he needs a sword only because he is imperfect, and that a true warrior needs none. Thorfinn, listening from the ship, asks Ari what it means. It is chapter 15 of the manga ('A True Warrior') and episode 4 of the anime. Moments later Bjorn takes Thorfinn hostage and Thors throws his sword into the water.
