Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

This is the answer to the whole first half of the series. The boy who lived for revenge has become a man who would rather be beaten a hundred times than lift a fist, and the line is how he states his new creed to an army. Fans quote it when someone refuses to hate on principle, and it is shorthand for Thorfinn's long road from vengeance to peace.

Spoilers for Vinland SagaShow the scene

In Vinland Saga season 2, episode 22 (overall episode 46), The King of Rebellion (MAPPA, aired 6 June 2023), Thorfinn walks into the army of King Canute, which is attacking Ketil's farm, to ask for peace. The soldiers promise him an audience with the king if he can survive 100 punches from the champion Drott, and he takes them without striking back. Afterwards the commander Wulf asks why he never fought back. Thorfinn answers that he came to negotiate, that he has just met these men and has no reason to hate them, and that he has no enemies. Wulf lets him through to Canute. The scene adapts the manga's chapter 96.
