You have no enemies. No one has any enemies.
— Vinland Saga · 2019
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is the thesis of the whole series, said by a man who has killed for a living and quit. Thorfinn spends years of revenge and war failing to understand it, and it comes back as a dream of his father in episode 33, when the story is turning toward a life without enemies. Fans quote it as the series' moral heart, the answer to every blade in the show.

Vinland Saga, anime episode 2, "Sword" (2019, from manga chapter 7). In the Icelandic village, young Thorfinn hears that the Jomsvikings have come for his father, a deserter they remember as Thors the Troll, and that men will sail to war. After a fight with the other boys, he goes home and finds Thors' old war chest, with a short sword inside. Thors takes the blade from him by the edge, cutting his own hand, and tells him that nobody is his enemy and nobody is anyone's enemy, so there is no one he should hurt. Thorfinn does not believe him.
