Sense and Sensibility ‧ 1811
It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy; it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others.
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Closeness, Austen says, has little to do with how long you've known someone. Some people stay strangers for seven years while others click within a week. What matters is temperament, and setting years against days makes the point vivid.
