Death by snu-snu!

— Futurama • 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A death sentence that sounds like a prize: the joke is how quickly Zapp and Fry stop being scared. The phrase escaped the episode and became general-purpose geek slang for anything delightfully ruinous, and the show kept bringing snu-snu back, which shows how much fans wanted it.

Spoilers for FuturamaShow the scene

In "Amazon Women in the Mood" (season three, aired 4 February 2001, written by Lewis Morton), Zapp Brannigan lands the Planet Express crew on a world of giant women. The Amazonians' leader is a huge computer called Femputer, voiced by Bea Arthur, and she punishes the men who arrive: Zapp, Fry and Kif are sentenced to death by "snu-snu," the Amazonians' word for sex. Bender escapes the sentence because he has no genitalia. The last men to visit, the crew are told, died of shattered pelvises. Zapp and Fry are excited and horrified at once; Kif is only horrified.
