Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
It is Duke at his most unembarrassed: an action hero so in love with his own reflection that the game stops to let him say so. The vanity is the joke, a send-up of 1980s muscle-bound movie heroes, and it stuck because it was a tiny reward for exploring. Fans still quote it at any mirror, selfie or fresh haircut, and it stands for the whole swaggering Duke persona.

Spoilers for Duke Nukem 3DShow the scene
In Duke Nukem 3D, 3D Realms' first-person shooter (shareware release 29 January 1996, full game 19 April 1996), Earth's streets, cinemas and strip clubs are crawling with alien invaders, and Duke wisecracks his way through them in Jon St. John's gravel-voiced delivery. The game's levels are packed with things to poke at, mirrors included: walk up to one and use it, and Duke checks himself out and says he's looking good. There is no cutscene and no other character in the scene; it is a throwaway reaction to the player's curiosity, one of dozens of interactive quips Duke has for the world around him.
