Duke Nukem in a red tank top, jeans and sunglasses stands on a heap of defeated pig-faced alien cops on a rain-slick neon Los Angeles street, shotgun on his shoulder and cigar smoke curling.

Duke Nukem

Hail to the king, baby!

— Duke Nukem 3D · 1996

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Duke is a collage of action heroes, and this is the loudest stitch: the swagger of a B-movie hero with a chainsaw hand, transplanted onto a bigger, louder hero with a pistol. Duke said it with such conviction that many players first heard it from the game, not the film. It became his unofficial coronation line, still printed on shirts and used whenever someone declares themselves in charge.

Spoilers for Duke Nukem 3DShow the scene

Duke Nukem 3D lets Duke chatter constantly as he fights through an alien-infested Los Angeles, and most of his one-liners are lifted from 80s and 90s action and horror films. This one is borrowed outright from Bruce Campbell's Ash in Army of Darkness (1993), where it is the theatrical cut's final line. In the game it is one of Duke's stock quips, spoken by Duke himself, rather than a line tied to one cutscene or boss.
