Duke Nukem sits with a grin on the body of a fallen green-armoured space marine in a red, organic alien corridor, a shadowy alien lurking behind, in black and red duotone.

Hmm, that's one doomed space marine.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a rival studio's hero turned into a punchline in a game that existed to dethrone him. Duke's team at 3D Realms was selling a louder, funnier, more interactive shooter than Doom, and the dead marine pays that off in one pun and a secret that rewards curious players. It remains one of the best-known cheeky in-jokes in shooter history.

Spoilers for Duke Nukem 3DShow the scene

On Death Row, the third level of Duke Nukem 3D's first episode, L.A. Meltdown, a chapel inside the prison hides a secret area. Using the stone with the alien face at the front turns the chapel red, and shattering the left stained-glass pane opens a tunnel to the hidden room. In it lies the dead body of Doomguy, the hero of id Software's Doom. Duke spots the corpse and delivers the pun. The level's secrets list calls this one "Doomed space marine". In Duke Nukem 64 the corpse moves to a dungeon on L.A. Rumble.
