Cave Johnson

Science isn't about why! It’s about why not!

— Portal 2 • 2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Cave Johnson is a billionaire who treats safety as an administrative obstacle, and this speech is the whole company philosophy in a breath: ask not whether you should, but why not. It turned into a motto for fans in labs, workshops and engineering teams everywhere, usually quoted with relish as a reason to try the ridiculous thing. J. K. Simmons's rising bellow, followed by the sudden reassurance to the test subject, is the joke.

Spoilers for Portal 2Show the scene

In Portal 2 (2011), once Chell wakes the abandoned Aperture Science Enrichment Center, she works through the old test shafts, where founder Cave Johnson (voiced by J. K. Simmons) speaks through pre-recorded messages from decades earlier. In Test Chamber 28, a Repulsion Gel puzzle with a bouncing antique cube, a message plays before the exit elevator in which Johnson loses his temper. He insists that science is about "why not", suggests inventing a safety door that will not hit you on the way out because you are fired, then assures the test subject that the firing is for someone else. Part of the speech was recycled from a memo revealed during the Portal alternate reality game.
