A lone woman in an orange jumpsuit, seen from behind, rides a small freight elevator up through a vast dark chamber where rows of white egg-shaped robots with red eyes line the ledges and a huge robot with one yellow eye looms above.

You know, being Caroline taught me a valuable lesson. I thought you were my greatest enemy, when all along you were my best friend. The surge of emotion that shot through me when I saved your life taught me an even more valuable lesson – where Caroline lives in my brain.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is GLaDOS reasoning her way out of her own humanity: the kind-hearted Caroline buried in her code made her save Chell, so the logical fix is to delete Caroline and carry on as the cold machine. Delivered in GLaDOS's flat, mock-sincere voice, it works as a grudging, funny farewell, and fans reach for it whenever a change of heart is quickly regretted.

Spoilers for Portal 2Show the scene

At the climax of Portal 2 (Valve, 2011), Chell has plugged corrupted personality cores into Wheatley and placed a portal on the Moon, and the two of them are pulled toward the vacuum. GLaDOS, back in control of the Aperture facility, pulls Chell back and abandons Wheatley in space. When Chell wakes, GLaDOS tells her that being Caroline, the human whose mind was copied into her, taught her a lesson. Having saved Chell's life, she says, she found where Caroline lives in her brain. The announcer says Caroline is deleted, and GLaDOS lets Chell go.
