This was a triumph. I'm making a note here: huge success.

Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The line is deadpan passive-aggression set to a bossa-nova lilt: a defeated AI describing her own murder attempt as a triumph worth writing a note about. It works because Portal spent the whole game teaching players to hear GLaDOS's cheer as menace. 'Huge success' became shorthand for a disaster delivered with a smile, and the song is the game's most quoted piece of music.

'Still Alive' is the song that plays over the closing credits of Portal (2007), after Chell has destroyed GLaDOS. Jonathan Coulton, a Half-Life fan, wrote it after two Valve developers commissioned a song from him, and Ellen McLain, who voices GLaDOS, sings it in character. Its lyrics scroll on what looks like a computer console and reveal that the AI survived. This opening verse is the 'huge success' line, delivered in the same cheerful tone GLaDOS uses for her test announcements. Valve released the song free for Rock Band on April 1, 2008.
