You're not a good person. You know that, right?

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is the first time GLaDOS drops her mask. A tutorial AI that has been politely praising you suddenly sounds like a disappointed relative, and the game has told you, in one breath, that nobody in this building is on your side. The flat delivery of the question is what lingers: fans quote it at friends who have just done something small and dumb, and the sentence became a shorthand for the whole character.

Spoilers for PortalShow the scene

Early in Portal (2007), in the Aperture Science Enrichment Center, GLaDOS guides the silent test subject through the first chambers over the intercom in a cheerful, clinical voice. Around Test Chambers 04 and 05 she announces that the next chamber will not be monitored, as a required test protocol. If the player manages to trap themselves in the test area, the scripted reply is this line, delivered flat, as a verdict. A moment later she admits that the statement about not watching was an outright fabrication, and congratulates the player anyway.
