GLaDOS

We both said a lot of things that you're going to regret. But I think we can put our differences behind us. For science. You monster.

— Portal 2 · 2011

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is a villain's apology written as a threat: GLaDOS acts as though they had a minor quarrel, offers a truce in the name of science, then stabs with the last word. The joke runs on the reversal, because Chell has done nothing in this game but be killed and thrown in tests. Fans quote the last two words whenever someone sets up an olive branch with a barb attached.

At the end of the first Portal, Chell destroyed GLaDOS. In Portal 2 (2011), Chapter 1, "The Courtesy Call", the dilapidated Aperture Science Enrichment Center is falling apart around Chell and the personality-core robot Wheatley, who is trying to escape with her. During the escape Wheatley accidentally wakes the wrecked GLaDOS in her old central chamber. She greets Chell with this speech, voiced by Ellen McLain, then promptly resumes making her complete test chambers. The game later hands out an achievement called "You Monster" for reuniting with her.
