Peppy Hare

Do a barrel roll!

— Star Fox 64 · 1997

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

A genuine tip from a veteran pilot, which the internet turned into a reflex for any situation, from a joke reply to a request for an absurd solution. It works because Peppy delivers it with such calm authority: no matter the problem, the answer is to spin. Fans quote it whenever someone is in need of a dodge.

Spoilers for Star Fox 64Show the scene

In Star Fox 64 (1997), the Star Fox team flies Arwing fighters, and during each mission Peppy Hare, the veteran rabbit pilot and Fox's advisor, calls out tips over the radio. This is one of them, and in the Japanese version the same advice reads as a hint to roll to deflect enemy fire. The game teaches the move by having the player press the Z or R button twice, and a roll can bat enemy shots away, which is why Peppy shouts it when shots are flying. It became the game's best-remembered line.
