Goldmember's 1970s lounge: an older gentleman in a brown suit raises a finger in a pronouncement beside a younger man in a green velvet suit, while a gold-clad figure recoils across the shag-carpeted room.

There's only two things I hate in this world: people who are intolerant of other people's cultures, and the Dutch.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The setup is the joke: a line that starts like a speech for tolerance and swerves into a prejudice against the Dutch. Nigel is the film's suave old-school spy, and the way he delivers an absurd bigotry as if it were a principle is pure Caine. Fans use it to turn any lecture on its head, and the 'only a bloody Dutchman' follow-up shows the film loved the gag too.

Spoilers for Austin Powers in GoldmemberShow the scene

In Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), Austin and his father Nigel are in Goldmember's 1975 hideaway, and Goldmember has just sung a snatch of KC and the Sunshine Band at them. Nigel, the veteran superspy played by Michael Caine, tells him not to play the laughing boy, then says there are only two things he hates in this world: people who are intolerant of other cultures, and the Dutch. Goldmember is insulted and orders the girls to take Nigel away. Nigel returns to the gag when Goldmember reveals his key, muttering that only a Dutchman would do it.
