A 1975 gold-and-orange lounge behind a swung-open wall: a man in a gold lame jumpsuit welcomes his guests toward a table of pancakes and waffles, watched from behind by a man in a red velvet suit and a silver-haired gentleman in a neck brace raising a hand in refusal.

Goldmember

Would you like a smoke and a pancake?

— Austin Powers in Goldmember · 2002

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The joke is a villain trying to be a hospitable host and failing to notice that nothing he offers makes sense. Goldmember's version of a menu is pure wordplay, with each smoking item paired to a breakfast food, and the Dutch-accented sing-song delivery makes it stick. Fans quote it as shorthand for a deliberately silly offer, and the line is one of the most repeated bits from the character.

Spoilers for Austin Powers in GoldmemberShow the scene

Austin Powers and his father Nigel have travelled back to 1975 in Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002), and Nigel is busy swapping rhyming-slang banter with his son when a wall in their hideaway swings round to reveal Goldmember. He welcomes them to 1975 and offers a smoke and a pancake, then rattles through a string of swaps: a flapjack and a cigarette, a cigar and a waffle, a pipe and a crepe, a bong and a blintz. Austin and Nigel say no to each, and Goldmember decides there is no pleasing them. Mike Myers plays him, as well as Austin and Dr. Evil.
