Bubba's obsession is funny, but it is also the film's promise: a plain dream that outlives him. Fans quote it for any enthusiast who can talk about one thing forever, and the Bubba Gump Shrimp restaurant chain, opened in 1996 and named for the pair, turned the film's seafood into a menu. Shrimp remains the most Forrest Gump food there is.

Early in Forrest Gump, Forrest is drafted and meets Benjamin Buford Blue, 'Bubba', a fellow recruit who has worked on shrimp boats all his life and wants one of his own. In basic training, once the drill sergeant has walked off, Bubba carries on in his slow Southern drawl and runs through all the ways to cook shrimp. The dream of a shrimping business for the two of them outlives Bubba, who dies in Vietnam; Forrest later buys the boat to keep the promise.
