Run, Forrest, run!

— Forrest Gump · 1994

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Jenny hands Forrest his one real talent in a few words, and the film brings the idea back whenever he has to flee or choose. It is now a cheerful all-purpose command to a friend who needs to move, a stock slogan on race shirts and gym walls, and a reminder that the person who most needs to run in the story is Jenny.

In 1954 Alabama, young Forrest Gump, in leg braces for a curved spine, is walking home with Jenny when three boys on bikes pelt him with dirt clods and call him names. Jenny tells him to run away, and when he can only hobble she keeps shouting it from the roadside. Forrest speeds up as the bikes close in, his braces snap off, and he finds he is a very fast runner, a gift that carries him to a football scholarship and later across America.
