Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Behind the cheerful question is the loneliness of a girl who does not understand why her best friend shut her out. It is the emotional core of the film's first act, and the line is now an all-purpose invitation to come outside and play, a meme for any door that stays closed, and a punchline in other franchises: Deadpool and Wolverine even uses the title as a euphemism.

Frozen opens its first act with Anna knocking on her sister's bedroom door. When they were small, Elsa made snow for Anna to play with, until Elsa accidentally strikes Anna with her ice. The king and queen then lock the gates, reduce the staff and keep Elsa apart to protect everyone, including Anna, who no longer remembers the magic. Anna stands in the corridor outside Elsa's door and asks again and again, in song, through the years as they grow up and their parents die. The question opens the musical number of the same name, which Kristen Bell sings as Anna at every age.
