Oh, Anna. If only there was someone out there who loved you.

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

The line lands as cruelty because for a moment it sounds like sympathy. It is where a Disney prince turns out to be the villain, which the film built on purpose: the filmmakers wanted viewers to think Hans was the answer so the turn would surprise them. Fans quote it as the great fairy-tale rug-pull, and as a cold way to say nobody will save you.

Spoilers for FrozenShow the scene

Anna has been carried back to Arendelle Castle with her heart freezing, because her sister Elsa struck her with ice on the North Mountain. She begs Prince Hans, whom she thinks is her fiance, for a kiss of true love to save her. Hans steps back and says the line. Then he tells her he never loved her: thirteenth in line in his own kingdom, he planned to marry into a throne and then stage an accident for Elsa. He leaves Anna to freeze, and tells the dignitaries she died in his arms. Santino Fontana voices Hans.
