I'm not even supposed to be here! I'm just Crewman #6. I'm expendable. I'm the guy who dies to show the situation is serious!
— Galaxy Quest ‧ 1999
Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
Guy has realised he is a redshirt in a story that is suddenly real, and the joke lands because every Star Trek fan knows that extra's fate. The line is now the standard way to say you are the disposable character in any situation, from office layoffs to horror films. The film then lets Guy outlive the trope.

Spoilers for Galaxy QuestShow the scene
Aboard the Thermians' real ship, the actors have just watched a tape showing Sarris's cruelty and begun to grasp that this is not a TV set. Guy Fleegman, the convention handler who played Crewman #6 in a single episode, panics: he should not even be here, he says, he is a nameless crewman, expendable, the one who dies in the episode to prove the danger is real. He wants out. A Thermian then arrives to tell the commander that Sarris is aboard.
