Taggart

Never give up! Never surrender!

— Galaxy Quest ‧ 1999

Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

It is Star Trek captain-speak boiled down to a motto, played straight by a film that loves what it mocks. By the end the line stops being a joke about a vain actor and becomes true, because a washed-up cast really does refuse to quit. Fans quote it for any losing fight, and it names the film's 2019 documentary Never Surrender and its 20th-anniversary Blu-ray edition.

Spoilers for Galaxy QuestShow the scene

Commander Peter Quincy Taggart is the square-jawed captain of the NSEA Protector in the cult TV series Galaxy Quest, and this is his trademark catchphrase. In the 1999 film the show is long cancelled and its cast, led by Jason Nesmith (who played Taggart), are reduced to fan conventions. Then the Thermians, aliens who have never grasped fiction, take the old episodes for historical documents and build their society on the show's virtues. They recruit the cast to fight a real warlord aboard a working copy of the Protector.
