Behind the line

What it means

Our interpretation.

Gwen's outburst is the actors' revenge on every contrivance they once had to deliver straight, and fans love it because anyone who has endured a badly written episode wants to say the same. It is now the standard sarcastic comment on any scripted idiocy, in the kind of show Galaxy Quest mocks and in plenty of real ones.

Spoilers for Galaxy QuestShow the scene

Aboard the Protector, the cast must cross a corridor of heavy crushing machines, the chompers, which the Thermians copied from an episode of the old TV show. Gwen DeMarco is furious that the hazard serves no purpose: it makes no logical sense, she says, and asks why it is there. Told it is there because it was on the show, she refuses, then goes through anyway. Once she is across, she gives her verdict on the writers.
