Behind the line
What it means
Our interpretation.
The joke is that Regina's own rules are used against her, and by the friend who has always been too scared to enforce them. Gretchen finally has a rule she can wield. The line is now the universal cry of any clique closing its table; the TV series How to Get Away with Murder even quoted it in a season 3 episode.

Spoilers for Mean GirlsShow the scene
Cady has helped to bring Regina down, in part by feeding her high-calorie bars until nothing fits her but sweatpants. On a Monday Gretchen and Karen turn the Plastics' own dress code on her. Gretchen points out that it is Monday and sweatpants are against the rules, so Regina cannot sit with them. Regina says the rules are not real; Gretchen says they were real the day she wore a vest, and Karen adds that the vest was disgusting. Gretchen delivers this line. Regina is out, and Cady becomes the new queen bee.
