Jack Sparrow turns a plain 'you look upset' into something grand, and the pomp is the joke. It also does a job: it is the opening move in one of his sly attempts to read Elizabeth and win her over. Fans quote it as the way to ask a friend what is wrong while sounding like a pirate with far too much self-regard.

Aboard ship, with Jack Sparrow hunting the key and chest that can control Davy Jones, Elizabeth Swann is plainly unhappy and Jack notices. He opens with this ornate line, then gets to the point: she thought she would be married by now, and as a captain he could perform the ceremony on the spot. She turns him down. Jack then tells her they are very much alike, apart from honour, decency and a moral centre, and predicts that curiosity will bring her over to his side.
